How to Do a Crossword: A Beginner's Guide for People Who Think They Can't

I’m Not Smart Enough for Crosswords

This is EXACTLY what I used to think. For decades, I never even attempted to solve one, because they looked too daunting. How the heck are you even supposed to start?! But as soon as a friend taught me the basic rules, I was able to jump right in. Let me show you the ropes!

The Grid WANTS You to Solve It!

In an American-style crossword, every white square belongs to TWO answers—one going Across and one going Down. That gives you TWO chances to solve every single square! If you don’t know the answer to 1-Across, maybe you will for 1-Down.

And who says that you have to start at 1-Across? The best solvers often scan the list of clues to find something they know for sure. Getting that toehold in place helps tremendously, because once you get started, the puzzle becomes easier and easier.

The Mini Is the Right First Crossword

One insider tip before you start: do your first one on a Monday. Like the classic newspaper crosswords, our Mini eases you in at the start of the week and gets tougher as the week goes on — so a Monday puzzle is the friendliest possible place to start. Save Saturday for once you've got a few wins under your belt.

A full-size 15x15 grid is huge. It’s intimidating. It can sap hours of your life—and that’s on a good day! A 5×5 is completely different. Super approachable!

Here's what the solving process looks like in action:

You see 1-Across, “Stay up all night studying,” and you tremble. You don’t know the answer! Who does?! You immediately feel stupid and decide to go scroll Instagram.

BUT WAIT! Check out 1-Down: “Person in charge of a restaurant kitchen.” Hold on . . . four letters . . . that’s gotta be CHEF! You write that in.

And now, you go back to 1-Across. When you stay up all night, studying for a test . . . you CRAM! That starting C helps a ton, doesn’t it?

From there, you go back and forth, filling in Across and Down answers. Before you know it, you’ve completed your first crossword!

Things Beginners Believe That Aren’t True

‼️ "You need a big vocabulary." Nope, not at all! The only thing you need is practice. With each Mini that you do, you’ll develop a better sense of letter patterns. You’ll start to realize that there's a small set of short words that turn up constantly, like OREO, ERIE, ALOE, ERA. We constructors lean on these words because their vowels help hold a grid together. You'll absorb them by playing more crosswords.

‼️ "Using the hints is cheating." Not even a little. Stuck on a square? Hit Check to see if you're right, or Reveal to fill a letter and get moving again. These aren't cheating — they're training wheels, and everybody uses them starting out. (And yes, Google a bit of trivia if you're curious. I still do!)

‼️ "You have to solve in order." Crosswords are not like books and movies. You can solve crosswords in any order you want. Start wherever you know something for sure.

‼️ "If you can't get 1-Across, you're stuck." You're never stuck; you're just at the wrong clue. Keep moving until you find a clue that you can answer. With our Mini, there will almost always be at least one.

‼️ "Crosswords are for people smarter than me." Granted, there are some crosswords out there that try to make themselves too hard. That’s precisely why we built our Mini. These crosswords are for everybody.

That First "Click" Is the Whole Point

Here's what nobody tells you: finishing your first crossword feels ridiculously good for something that took two minutes. The last letter drops in, the grid lights up, and there's this little jolt — I did that. It's a disproportionate reward for a tiny effort, which is exactly why people come back to it every single day.

I've watched a lot of people go from "I could never" to a daily streak, and it almost always starts with one finished grid. Not a fast one, not a clever one — just one that's done. Get that first win and you'll understand why the rest of us are hooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you do a crossword for beginners?

Start with a small puzzle like the Mini. Read through the clues, fill in any you know for sure, and let the crossing letters help you with the rest — every square is part of both an Across and a Down answer, so a word you don't know is usually solvable from the words crossing it. Start wherever you know something; you don't have to begin at 1-Across.

What's the best crossword for a beginner?

A small daily one — a 5×5 Mini is ideal. It's finishable in a couple of minutes, so a stumble costs you seconds instead of an evening. Start on a Monday, when the week's puzzles are easiest.

Do I need a big vocabulary to do crosswords?

No. You need pattern recognition, and that comes from playing, not studying. A small set of short, vowel-heavy words (OREO, ERIE, ALOE) turns up constantly, and you'll absorb them just by solving.

Is it cheating to check or reveal a letter?

No — the Check and Reveal buttons are how everyone learns. Use them freely when you're stuck; nobody's grading you.

How long does it take to get good at crosswords?

Faster than you'd think. Solve a small one most days and you'll feel the difference within a couple of weeks — finishing comes first, speed comes later on its own.

Where can I play an easy crossword for free?

Right here. The daily Mini is free with no account, and if you want to keep going, there's an unlimited stack of easy 5×5s.

Go Finish One

That's the whole secret: you don't need to be smart, you need to start. So go do it — today's Mini is free, takes two minutes, and there's no account or paywall in your way. Stumble on a clue? Fire the crossing answer and let the letters bail you out.

And once you've got that first "click," you'll probably want another. There's an unlimited stack of easy 5×5s waiting — the fix for "I can't do crosswords" is finishing three of them, not reading about them.

Want to actually get fast? Once you're finishing comfortably, here's how to get faster at the Mini.
